Boreal Evacuated After Fire

The British military came to aid to the French cruise ship Le Boreal, currently sailing an Antarctica voyage and passing close to the Falkland islands. According to media reports the vessel issued a distress call shortly after 2am in the morning. A fire broke out in the engine room leaving the ship stranded and running risk of grounding on a reef.

All passengers got evacuated and no injuries have been reported. 90 people have been airlifted out of life rafts with the rest of the about 350 passengers and 90 crew being transferred by vessels.

Passengers where taken to the Falkland islands. The nearby cruise ship L’Austral, belonging to the same cruise line, will pick them up and transfer them back to shore. The rest of the current cruise on Le Boreal has been cancelled and it is save to assume that the next cruise will be cancelled as well while the damage is assessed in port.
